MEDICAL PHYSICIST EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT GAPS IN UKRAINE

Abstract

Introduction. Over the past decade and despite the martial law, there is a tendency to increase the number of high-tech medical equipment to provide services to the population, however, high-tech innovative valuable equipment cannot be used in the absence of qualified medical physicists and engineers, so there is an urgent need for their training and employment.

Methods. An analysis of national normative documents on the activities of medical physicists was carried out in comparison with international recommendations using analytical, comparative and generalizing methods; the results of my own experience are attached.

Results. A description of the international practice of training medical physicists, who have a special responsibility for ensuring control and quality assurance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures during medical radiation, radiation protection of personnel and patients, is provided.

Conclusions. The authors analyse national educational curriculums and legislation on the legal support of medical physicist activities in the article. In particular, their duties and areas of responsibility are compared to international documents. International practices on medical physicist training are presented as for a specialist who takes special responsibility for the performance of control and quality assurance during diagnostics and therapy procedures with medical exposure and radiation protection of personnel and patients.
